Wayne Krantz has just released an amazing book: AN IMPROVISER'S OS. It is certainly guitar-specific, but it also reaches out to ALL improvisers as well as ALL composers. In my own recent books, I have used math as a potent ally in my offerings....Wayne has taken it to a whole other level................This book is the ULTIMATE BOOK OF COMPLETE SETS!!!!!! If I had to go to a desert-island with only a guitar and 1 book, this would be the one!!!! [and it is small, as well!!]

Just got the book. I love how this is directly dealing with the inherent problems of improvising on an instrument that lends itself completely towards patterns and licks. i feel like a young monk who just got his hands on some arcane manuscripts...

Voici un petit livre vite lu mais dont le contenu pourra vous tenir occupé (voir vous obséder carrément) pendant plusieurs années. C'est une méthode pratique pour apprivoiser l'improvisation, un guide de la création spontanée.
Court, compact et effectif, cet exposé place Wayne Krantz au centre de la réflexion théorique en ce qui touche à la musique inventée sur le moment, sans toutefois négliger les conseils pratiques et indications judicieuses quant à l'exécution de celle-ci. (On se rappelle Boulez; son refus de servir la tradition, son désir de briser les icones, sa rigueur mais aussi son ouverture d'esprit et son appétit de nouveauté.)
"An Improviser's OS" est un texte fascinant qui ne vous procurera certes pas un nouveau contrat de disques, mais dont le potentiel à ouvrir les portes de l'imagination vaut certainement son prix modique...À lire absolument !

I just got the IOS book, it's awesome! Very innovative, very unorthodox, very different from any guitar/music book I've ever had. A great approach - my improvising skills as well as composing skills are being transformed, a whole different approach to making music.

Seriously, it's probably the greatest book on improvisation i've ever read, IMHO. The exercises are great but its the more general comments and thoughts on improvisation that really captured my heart. Amazing analogies combined with articulate and straight to the point methods for dissecting your own playing ... just incredible stuff ... i reckon it might result in a few insane guitarists tho ...
